The Alhambra in winter

From mid-October the Alhambra closes at six, the night palaces move to weekends and the Sierra Nevada turns white behind the towers. Fewer people, softer light, colder stone.

Winter is the Alhambra's quiet season, and it is the best time of year to see the Nasrid Palaces without being pushed along. The trade-off is shorter days: the monument shuts at 18:00 and the night visits shrink to two evenings a week.

This post covers the timetable from 15 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, the holidays to avoid, how far ahead to book and how to dress for a three-hour walk on a hilltop in January.

The quick answer

From 15 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the Alhambra opens daily 08:30-18:00, with the ticket office open 08:00-18:00. The night visit to the Nasrid Palaces runs on Fridays and Saturdays, 20:00-21:30. The monument is closed on 25 December and 1 January. Outside Christmas week and the holiday weekends, tickets are much easier to find than in spring or summer.

What are the Alhambra opening hours in winter 2026-27?

Every day from 08:30 to 18:00 between 15 October 2026 and 31 March 2027. The night visit to the Nasrid Palaces runs Friday and Saturday, 20:00 to 21:30.

These are the hours on the official horarios y tarifas page. The ticket office opens half an hour earlier, at 08:00, and closes at 18:00. The Nasrid Palaces still run on half-hour slots of 300 people, and you lose the palaces if you miss yours, so the time slot guide applies all winter.

The night gardens visit is the casualty of winter. It runs on Friday and Saturday evenings only until 14 November, then stops until April; our post on the last Generalife night visits has the remaining dates. Summer hours (08:30 to 20:00) come back on 1 April 2027.

Is the Alhambra open on Christmas and New Year's Day?

No. The Alhambra is closed on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Both fall on a Friday this winter, and the official calendar lists no other closed days.

The two closed days are the only ones in the official calendar. Because both are Fridays, check the night-visit calendar too if you hoped for the palaces after dark on one of those weekends.

The harder problem is the days around them. For the 2025-26 holidays, inSpain.news reported that more than 90% of tickets for 26 December to 6 January were sold before Christmas, with over 70,000 visitors expected. The early December bank holidays, 6 and 8 December, are busy too.

If your trip falls on those dates, book the day sales open, about three months ahead on the official ticket shop. If you are late, a guided tour that holds palace slots is usually the fastest way in.

Is it easier to get Alhambra tickets in winter?

Yes, outside the holidays. Weekday General tickets in January, February and most of November are often still on sale a week or more ahead, while summer runs close to full.

For scale: the Patronato reported 95.5% average occupancy over summer 2025, per Ahora Granada. Winter weekdays are nowhere near that. The early slots (08:30 to 10:00) are the first to go in any season, because tour groups want them, so if you can only do a morning, book that part first.

A winter quirk: the Generalife and the gardens lose their colour, and the flower beds are bare until spring. People who come for the gardens should consider the General ticket in winter rather than the Gardens-only ticket. The palaces are the same in January as in May.

Tours are cheaper to get onto too. The NHUE small-group tour covers the full route, and the premium version caps groups at about 10, which is lovely in quiet months.

What is the light like at the Alhambra in winter?

Low and warm. The sun rises around 08:30 in January and sets around 18:00 in December, so the first slot opens at sunrise and the gates close at dusk.

Low winter sun pushes deep into the Nasrid courtyards and lights the stucco from the side, which shows the carving far better than the flat noon light of June. The Court of the Myrtles is at its best mid-morning, when the Comares Tower reflects in the pool without glare.

The view everyone wants is the Alhambra in front of a white Sierra Nevada. You get it from the Mirador de San Nicolás or the Mirador de San Cristóbal in the Albaicín, on a clear day after a cold front. Go for the late afternoon, when the walls turn red. Inside the monument, the Torre de la Vela and the Generalife's upper gardens face the mountains.

Does it snow at the Alhambra in winter?

Rarely in the city, often on the mountains. Granada itself sees frost more than snow, while the Sierra Nevada above it is usually snow-capped from late November to spring.

AEMET's climate normals for Granada airport give a January average high of 13°C and an average low of 0°C. Sunny days are common and quite warm at noon. Mornings on the hill are cold, and the Alhambra stands a little higher than the city centre.

The Sierra Nevada ski resort usually opens in late November or early December, depending on snow, and its peaks (Mulhacén, at 3,479 m the highest in mainland Spain, and the Veleta) are what makes the winter postcard. A day of snow in the Alhambra itself happens every few winters and is gone by lunchtime.

Heavy rain is the bigger risk. Stone paths in the Generalife and the marble floors in the palaces get slippery, and there is little shelter between the Alcazaba and the Generalife.

What should you wear to the Alhambra in winter?

Layers, a warm jacket and shoes with grip. The visit is about three hours, mostly outdoors, and the palace rooms open onto courtyards, so they are barely warmer than outside.

Here is a short list that works from November to February:

  • Warm layers you can open at noon: 0°C at 08:30 can turn into 14°C by midday.
  • Shoes with grip for wet stone, gravel and the steps of the Alcazaba.
  • Gloves and a hat for the night visit, when the palaces are cold and you stand still a lot.
  • A small bag: backpacks and bags over 40 x 40 cm are not allowed in, per the official FAQ.
  • Your original passport or ID, the one you booked with. Tickets are named.

Bring water anyway. The walk up the Cuesta de Gomérez warms you up faster than you expect.
