Alhambra day trips

Granada is an easy day out from Málaga and a long one from Seville. The drive is the simple part: getting a Nasrid Palaces slot that fits your arrival time is what makes or breaks the day.

Plenty of people see the Alhambra without sleeping in Granada. From Málaga it takes about an hour and a half each way; from Seville, close to three. You can do it on your own by train or bus, or on an organised day trip that brings the tickets with it.

The catch is the same either way: the Nasrid Palaces need a fixed half-hour slot, and on many day trips they are an upgrade, not a given. Tour facts are from the live Viator listings; times and fares are from Renfe, Alsa and Love Granada, checked in October 2026.

The quick answer

From Málaga (about 125 km), the train or bus works well: Renfe's direct Avant takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. Book the General ticket with a palace slot around midday. From Seville (about 250 km), a day trip means close to six hours of travel, and a tour that handles the slot is worth it. Of the day trips we list, the Naturanda trip from Seville includes the palaces; the Málaga trip includes them only on its Full Tour options.

Can you visit the Alhambra on a day trip?

Yes. From Málaga it is a comfortable day; from Seville it is a 13-hour day that works, but leaves little time for Granada itself.

The Alhambra visit takes about three hours. Add the travel and a lunch, and Málaga gives you a relaxed 9-hour day. From Seville, the guests on the Naturanda trip describe it as long but worth it: one wrote "It is a very long day but worth the time commitment."

Either way, the tickets come first. Don't book a train or a tour until you know which Nasrid Palaces slot is available for your date. Our slot guide explains how the half-hour entry works.

How far is Granada from Seville and Málaga?

Train or tour: which is better for an Alhambra day trip?

From Málaga, the train or bus plus an official ticket is cheaper and works fine. From Seville, or on a sold-out date, a tour is the better bet.

Doing it yourself from Málaga: a return train or bus, a taxi or the C30 minibus up the hill, and the EUR 22.27 General ticket. You pick your own slot and your own lunch. The risk is a late train against a fixed palace time, so leave at least 90 minutes between arrival and the slot.

A tour adds a guide, door-to-door timing and, above all, a palace slot from the operator's own allocation. That last part matters most when the official calendar is empty. From Seville, with nearly three hours each way, we'd book the tour without much thought.

Which Alhambra day trips include the Nasrid Palaces?

From Seville, the Naturanda tour includes them. From Málaga, Discovering Spain includes them only on the Full Tour options. Several cheaper trips make them an optional extra.

What is the Alhambra day trip from Seville like?

Thirteen hours from the Naturanda office at Calle Trajano 6, a coach of up to 30, a guide, Alhambra and Nasrid Palaces tickets, and free time in the Albaicín.

The Naturanda trip costs $192, adult price from age 12. Guests describe roughly three hours on the coach each way with a rest stop in the middle, a local guide at the Alhambra and a lunch break in Granada that some found rushed. Food is not included.

One guest wished they had stayed in Granada instead of starting in Seville, because of the six-plus hours on the bus. That is the honest trade-off. If your Seville days are flexible, read the next section before booking.

How do you time a do-it-yourself day trip?

Choose the palace slot after you choose the train: arrive, allow 90 minutes to reach the hill, then fit the Generalife and Alcazaba around the slot.

  • From Málaga: take a morning Avant or bus, and book a palace slot around midday or early afternoon. Visit the Generalife first if the slot is late.
  • From Seville: take the first direct train and book a slot no earlier than 13:00. Check the return train before buying anything.
  • Station to the Alhambra: a taxi takes you straight up; by bus, change to the C30 minibus at Plaza Isabel la Católica.
  • Luggage: no backpacks or bags over 40 by 40 cm inside. Leave suitcases at a left-luggage service in town.

Every ticket price is in our Alhambra tickets guide. If the General is sold out for your date, the sold-out guide has the fallbacks.

Should you stay a night in Granada instead?

From Seville, yes, if you can. One night lets you add the Albaicín at sunset and, on the right evenings, the Alhambra night visit.

A day trip shows you the Alhambra. A night in Granada shows you the city around it: the view of the Alhambra from the Albaicín at sunset, the tapas bars and, on Fridays and Saturdays in winter, the night palaces visit. From Málaga, the day trip is fine. From Seville, one night turns six hours of coach into two relaxed train rides.
